Liquid Diet

Liquid diet refers to an eating plan that allows only liquid food. Usually this kind of diet is prescribed during illness or after surgery. A liquid diet generally includes partial or full fledged liquid consumption. It may include fruit juices, milk, tea etc They are often prescribed for weight loss. But most liquid diets are not suitable for weight loss.

Mostly physicians do not prescribe a liquid diet except for certain cases like undergoing treatments such as colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy. It is also prescribed prior to a surgery to flush the diets or decrease the work of the digestive system. Generally coffee, tea, sports drinks and soups are allowed before the surgery.

At times, some juices are also allowed. In such cases generally the physicians will provide the fact sheet explaining how to proceed with the diet. Similarly individuals those who undergo bariatric surgery are also required to observe a strict fluid diet.
