Artificial Sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners refer to those substances that provide sweetness but possess only little or no calorie. They do not supply any energy to the body. They include acesulfame , aspartame, saccharin and sucralose. They are usually used to replace sugar and other sweeteners with high calories.

They are generally helpful in controlling weight and insulin level in the body. Natural sweeteners should be used with caution because they can increase the insulin level and lead to obesity. They should not be used excessively.

There are many kinds of artificial sweeteners like saccharin , cyclamate , alitame , neotame , aspartame sucralose , acesulfame -k and stevia . The most popular sweetener presently is Aspartame . The particular feature of aspartame is it does not leave a bitter taste like saccharin. It is available under several brand names . It is used in diet soft drinks , several foods and as table sweeteners .
