Vegetarian diets

Vegetarian diets refer to foods from plants such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, seeds and nuts. The diet which includes plant foods, cheese and other diary products is called as lacto vegetarian diet. Another type of vegetarian diet called ovo- lactovegetarian or ovovegetarian diet also includes eggs. There are also semi vegetarians who don't eat meat but include fish and chicken in their diet along with plant foods, dairy products and eggs.

Most vegetarian diets include diets that are lower in total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol. There are studies that support vegetarian diets. They say that vegetarians relatively have a lower risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and some kinds of cancer and many other chronic diseases.

Vegetarian diets are healthy provided they include adequate nutrients. They can also be unhealthy if they include fewer nutrients and more calories. A vegetarian diet should essentially include protein, iron, vitamins, calcium and zinc.
