Junk foodJunk food refers to food items that have no nutritional value and have adverse effects on health. The phrase 'junk food' was coined by Michael Jacobson, director of the center for science in the public interest, in 1972.The most popular junk foods are hamburgers, pizza, candy, soda and salty foods such as potato chips and French fries. Even chewing gum and bubblegum are referred as junk food because they contain sugar and sugar alcohol. Sugar free gum usually will include sugar - alcohol for substitution .Sugar alcohol does not cause tooth decay but have calories. A junk food does not contain a balanced diet. It is high in fat, sodium and glucose. Junk foods are opposed by fast-food industries and environmentalists. They are popular because they are cheap to manufacture and easy to purchase and consume.
