Genetically modified foodA genetically modified food is a food product developed from different genetically modified organisms (GMO) such as a crop plant, animal or micro organisms such as yeast. Genetically modified foods that are developed through genetic engineering are popular since 1990s.The major ingredients for the genetically modified foods are derived from plants such as soybean, maize, canola, cocoa beans and cottonseed oil. Governments such as European Union and Japan require mandatory labeling and traceability of GM foods and they insist about the risks over the benefits of them. Some countries like US consider a ban on the sale of GM products as violation of free trade agreements. The future applications for GMO are diverse. It is said that it will include drugs for infectious diseases like Hepatitis -B. But its potentials are yet to be fully tested.
