Food allergyA food allergy refers to the allergic response of the immune system to a food. It is said that about twelve million Americans have some type of food allergies and the prevalence of food allergy is also rising.Nearly six to eight percentage of children also has food allergies and two percentages of the adults also have them. Most people are allergic to shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and eggs. Children are mostly allergic to milk, eggs and peanuts. Till this date there is no cure for food allergies. The only way out is avoiding the allergen or the diet that the person is allergic to completely in all its forms. In extreme cases, even touching or inhaling the allergen is also avoided. Sometimes persons diagnosed with food allergies carry an autoinjector of epinephrine such as EpiPen.
