A dietary supplement is designed to supply necessary nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, fatty acids or amino acids that are sufficient in a person's diet. Herbal supplements are more popular in curing or preventing several diseases. But the medical utility and regulation of dietary supplements is in question

In US, dietary supplement is defined under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 19994. A dietary supplement should meet the following criteria according to the act. It should contain some dietary ingredient like vitamin, mineral, an herb or an amino acid. It should be in the form prescribed by the act.

It should be labeled as a dietary supplement. In Europe food supplements should be demonstrated as safe as per the food supplement directive.
