Diabetic diet

Diabetic diet is perfect for people those who suffer from diabetes mellitus. It is usually the diet that is high in dietary fiber but low in fat. It contains especially the soluble fiber and less saturated fat and sugar. The diabetes patients are also advised to consume foods that have fewer carbohydrates because they have a high glycemic index.

With the introduction of insulin by 1922, there is more flexibility for patients in their intake. The American Diabetes association brought forth a scheme called the exchange scheme in 1950's with the co-operation of U. S public health service. It involves replacing foods of similar nutritional value with another. This scheme was revised several times in 1976, 9186 and1995. But this scheme is not widely recommended.

As for as diabetes patients are concerned, not only what one eats but when one eats is also important. The insulin should be injected before the meal. But how long before it is injected depends upon the type of insulin one takes. The insulin is of several kinds like long, medium or quick acting insulin.
