Atkins Diet

The Atkins diet is also known as Atkins nutritional approach. It is a popular low carbohydrate diet. It was adopted by Dr. Robert Atkins to resolve his overweight condition. After successfully testing this diet in over ten thousand patients, he popularized this diet. He has written a series of books on this diet. This type of diet does not support the food pyramid. This diet also recommends food with low carbohydrates.

It is because food rich in carbo hydrates is the primary reason for many eating disorders. High carbohydrates intake results in hyperinsulinism or excessive secretion of insulin. This diet balances insulin and blood sugar levels. It changes the metabolic process causing burning of stored fats.

There are four phases in atkin's diet. They are induction phase, ongoing weight loss, and premaintenance and lifetime maintenance. The introductory phase is the first and most restrictive phase in the atkin's diet. The second phase and third phase insists on an increase in the carbo hydrate intake but maintaining the level. The last phase involves carrying out the techniques learnt in the previous phases.
