Junk Food Banned in Latvian Schools

Latvia looks to promote healthier diet alternatives to its schools and nurseries. Foods like milk, fruit and nuts are encouraged among children with a view to promote healthier lifestyles. This decision follows warnings from nutritionists about current dietary trends that pose a significant danger to children's health.

The new era of dieting among young children is a part of the global strategy on diet, physical activity and health, DPAS. The World health organization is helping countries promote DPAS and the ban by Latvia is a reflection of the work of the WHO and the EU to encourage better eating habits in children. The ban in Latvia may be a precursor to similar ones in other EU member nations.

Soft drinks producers and snack food producers in the European Union have been pressurized to restrict the availability of their products to children. Russia has already put a ban on junk foods in schools. French authorities have also removed vending machines from schools in France.

There is a growing campaign of health conscious food to children. Governments along with the WHO are instrumental in this campaign. Among the other governments that are seeking to implement a ban or regulation on junks foods are Portugal and State of California, USA. The plan is to regulate the fast foods and soft drinks from canteens and school bars.

The DPAS formed by the WHO, plans health information and health literacy campaigns that are required to improve the environs for appropriate diet and physical activity. This is to reduce obesity and chronic diseases.

The British Soft drinks association is of the opposite view. Their views is the measure to improve health is to improve the nutritional quality of the diet and not a blanket ban on soft drinks and other products. It encourages the promotions for healthy diets and the encouragement of exercises and health education for children. It is still to be seen as to what effect the bans and regulations will have.
