Bill Clinton Switches to Vegan Low Cholesterol Diet

At the wedding of his daughter in July 2010, former US President Bill Clinton stunned the world with his dramatic new lean look. His daughter, Chelsea, had apparently ordered Clinton to lose at least fifteen pounds for the wedding, so that he could be in good shape to walk her down the aisle. And Bill Clinton did just that with a low cholesterol diet!

The world wondered how the renowned food lover had managed to lose so many pounds. Now the secret is out, from no less than the horse's mouth. In an interview given to CNN's Wolf Blitzer on September 20, 2010, Bill Clinton was asked how he had managed to lose so much weight and if had a special diet plan.

Clinton announced to the world in the interview that he has gone on a new plant-based, low cholesterol diet which made it possible for him to be in shape for Chelsea's wedding. He said that he had lost 24 pounds. According to the former President, he now weighed the same as he did in high school.

In September 2004, former President Clinton had undergone a quadruple bypass surgery at the age of 58. In February 2010, two stents were placed in an hour-long surgical procedure. Ever since his bypass operation, Bill Clinton has said to have been watching his weight.

In the interview with CNN, Clinton revealed how he had realised after the stent procedure that high cholesterol was still building up and could cause future heart incidents. It prompted him to gather information about how a plant-based low cholesterol diet can stop and reverse heart disease.

Clinton referred to studies done by Dr. Caldwell B.Esselstyn and other doctors who have a pioneered a radical new approach to curing heart disease without the use of surgery. The twenty-year study done by Dr.Caldwell Esselstyn recommended a plant-based vegetarian diet, with no dairy products and no added fat.

The low cholesterol diet followed by Clinton meant that his menu included beans, legumes, vegetables and fruits, without any meat. Having totally shunned milk and milk products, Clinton takes a mix of almond milk and fruits along with protein supplements.

Although Bill Clinton does occasionally savour a little fish now and then, he is determined to stick to this plant-based diet plan so that he can reverse heart disease and stay in shape for the sake of any future grandchildren!

Reversing Heart Disease with a Low Cholesterol Diet Plan

Heart disease tops the list as the number one cause of mortality in the United States. Approach to curing heart disease has mostly been surgical in nature. Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., a renowned surgeon and physician at Cleveland Clinic, grew sceptical of the focus on heart surgeries without going to the root causes of the widespread problem.

Having seen his own father suffer a heart attack at the age of 43, Dr.Esselstyn was determined to treat heart disease using a different approach, that of following low cholesterol diet, which throws the spotlight on the underlying cause. He was convinced that the current Western diet consisting of high-fat, refined food products which led to high cholesterol levels was the root cause of the high number of heart attacks in the United States.

Dr.Esselstyn conducted a study, which started in 1985, and spanned twenty years on the effects of a low cholesterol diet plan on people with heart disease. The people in the study were patients with advanced heart disease, and had received surgical interventions such as heart bypass operations and angioplasty surgery.

The patients in the research were put on a plant-based, low cholesterol diet plan. Certain benchmarks were set. It was necessary for total cholesterol levels to be brought down and maintained at less than 150 mg/dl. The LDL level, also known as bad cholesterol level, had to be reduced to less than 80mg/dl and maintained. The patients showed significant improvement, and an overwhelming majority had no more heart attacks or problems. Tests indicated that natural healing due to the low cholesterol diet had occurred with arteries being widened.

A low cholesterol diet plan, containing plant products such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains and pulses can stop heart disease and reverse it. This was proved by the pioneering study done by Dr.Esselstyn. He also advises against dairy products such as milk or cheese. A complete ban on use of added fat and oils is advocated.

Low Cholesterol Diet Menus - What You Should Eat

In his book "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease", Dr.Esselstyn and his wife Ann introduce low cholesterol diet menus, which can help in keeping your heart healthy. The book also contains a lot of recipes, which can help in following a low cholesterol diet.
